The Peace Debate, Or, Another Reason to Love Durango

Peace became an offensive concept this past week in Pagosa Springs, CO, at least when it comes to holiday decorating. The wreath incident has gotten decent press, and if nothing else, it serves to draw unflattering attention to the dimwitted folks who claimed the peace-symbol wreath is anti-american, anti-christ, pro-terrorist, blahblahblah.

Well, Your Mom spent the weekend in neighboring Durango and happened to pick up a Sunday paper (the Durango Herald) on the way into the local greasy spoon for breakfast. Inside, on the front page of Section C, was this:






The backside of this page was blank, and the editorial featured at the top of the next page offered this explanation. At the risk of copyright infringement, here's the opening statement:


Peace on Earth
Wreath is a reminder of a message
Inspired by events in the news last week, the Herald's Opinion section begins today with a full-page reproduction of a Christmas wreath in the shape of the peace symbol. The backing page has been left blank so that readers can display the wreath without other text or ads showing through.

Truly heartwarming. I don't know if the Herald is considered to be one of the so-called "liberal media," but it sure rates a pat on the back for being sensible. It's a bit chilly up there, but it felt mighty warm reading that paper.
